Looking for one myself too at the moment but hoping to get a TD5 engined one due to having abit more potential and refinement.

The 300tdi engine is extremely reliable electronics wise compared to the gremlins the TD5 can have as it has none, haha. Apart from an EGR ECU which can be binned anyway. If you override the injector pump solenoid, you could pretty much drive them without a battery!

The reliablity of the 300 is great but I just think the possibity of 400Nm from the TD5 and better fuel economy is worth it. Know the TD5 engines fairly well now anyway as had to rebuild one in my dads discovery last year and also ended up with a couple of spare engines during it too.

Can get some very good 300s for very little money though!!!

Overheating can be an issue on all the engine really if not looked after apart maybe from the old non turbo ones but they couldn't pull a shopping trolley so make sure you take a good long test drive on any one you drive and don't be afraid to push it on hard as its only then some will start to show signs of overheating

Yes, they are pretty crude to drive but they are also good fun and people like us can sit in a noisey car with no interior all day long and still have a smile on iur face so I doubt it's really an issue is it

Some extra sound proofing can help a lot though and motorway speeds can really be made much nicer if you fit a disco transfer box as its a 1.2:1 as oppose to 1.4:1 (I've one ready here from my dads old discovery so that'll be the first thing I do)
Taller wheels help then again but unless you have the power to turn them at lower speeds, they can be more frustrating than anything else

Totally agreed through on them looking cool as fuck.
Can look unreal with a few bits added!!!

Strykers on here know the things inside out too so if you ever get stuck or want any info on them Ian or Paul might be worth a shout.

Haha, true. Real love/hate thing and a landcruiser or pajero is still more than likely money much better spent in terms of living with a jeep every day for most but I just always liked them so just my opinion of them.

Discoverys are very cheap now too and are are much more refined but just don't have the same appeal and may as well just get a proper everyday jeep like any of the japs then.

Dave fairly hit the nail on the head up there! I love them to be honest.. they are fairly noisy, pretty uncomfortable but there is something cool about driving them.. Also, parts are so cheap for them!!!

I actually run a Land Rover specialist up here in Straffan with another lad.
