Smile Need some info on 1JZ engines for 180sx build

Basically i am getting ready to start a 180sx drift car build in the coming weeks with the aim of competing in prodrift in the future.. and need some answers to a few a questions.. I plan on using a 1JZ engine and R154 gearbox in the car. (which 1jz, i cant make my mind up). Unfortunately i dont have deep pockets so im tryin to keep costs down where possible without skimping in important area's.. The cheapest option looks like buying an Automatic pre 97 soarer from england with the JZX90 engine and buy a manual box seperate even doh id prefer the JZX100 engine because of the single turbo and VVTi.. I was never a fan of twin turbo'd engines so my questions are as follows..

    1. Is there any advantage to splashing out the extra cash for a JZX100 engine over a jzx90 other than single turbo and Variable valve timing??

    2. If i decide to go with the JZX90 engine (twin turbo), Can you make that engine single turbo, if so, what turbo and manifold do i use, what else will i have to do, what cost am i looking at to make it single turbo, and will the standard jzx90 ecu still run it properly minus a turbo or will i need a management system??

    3. In your opinion which engine is the better option for a man on a budget and why..

    4. And finally for now, what actions should definitely be taken when running this engine in a 180sx.. eg, Oil cooler, What size intercooler, rad, fuel pump etc etc..

I would greatly appreciate any info on this and all comments and opinions welcome.. plus is there anything else i should know before jumping into this build head first..

you'l have to get an engine from a jzx90 chaser, as the soarer is rear sumped which wont work with the s13 subframe however if ya get a cheap soarer you can buy a front sump for the engine.

I dont know alot about the jzx100 engines but i seen a thread on here where christy carpenter said there more powerful from standard!

Ive had my non vvti engine for the past two years with the standard twins and it hasn't ever given any bother with plenty of abuse!!

    1. Is there any advantage to splashing out the extra cash for a JZX100 engine over a jzx90 other than single turbo and Variable valve timing??

1.Yes far better engine with the vvti head makes power more easy on bottom, get the right turbo and you will have 0% lag,

2.If you can pick a jzx90 engine up,get it as it comes stock with front sump and if its fresh from japan it may have low km,as if you go getting a soarer engine from uk it could have like 200,000 miles done and only crap oil ever put into it,that even if it was ever looked after...if you want to see nice power with stock cams go with the gt30 or if you like to get 550+ get 35r and fit a set of a/m cams, just get a japspeed manifold as good as any when braced, your stock ecu wont run a single turbo set up,so u will need some sort of management,i have a greddy blue emanage here with a jz harness if any interest

    3. In your opinion which engine is the better option for a man on a budget and why..

3.jzx90 front sump engine will make 800+ for a good one,jzx100 engine will make 1200+ with everything, what kind of power you after..!!

    4. And finally for now, what actions should definitely be taken when running this engine in a 180sx.. eg, Oil cooler, What size intercooler, rad, fuel pump etc etc..

    4.I use a big intercooler,70mm rad,3 x fuel pumps,used to have a oil cooler and took it off,car never runs over 85 deg...after 5 or 6 laps maybe 95 max

Sound for the good words so far lads.. Keep em comin..

@ Kev.. i think you missed the bit where i said i hadnt got deep pockets.. Francis Oshea's Sr20 = Deeeeeeeeeep pockets... I have taught about building an SR but for what it'd cost i just dont think its worth it.. Take into account the price of parts, shipping, labour, a good ecu, mapping etc.. Its a mugs game.. .. Plus you cant beat the sound of a 6 pot screamin down the straight in mondello 3rd gear sideways.. eg Greg's chaser..

@ Patt.. Must get on to Dave about prices, cheers

@ 1Jsoarer.. Sound for your input ted.. Is there any lag with the two turbo's or do you havta keep it up high in the revs at all times.. It doesnt seem to bother you anyway.. Serious car to skid
