Some of you have seen this already but its time to do an official build thread with extra pictures

Originally this was to be our Prototype ae86 but then Need for Speed came on board and we decided to build something extra special

We started off with the battered re86....

Until we ended up with as much or a little ae86 as possible

We started by welding up all the holes that would leave tyre smoke or rain water into the cockpit

Then we fabricated the rear strut bar that will be integrated into the rollcage and also the rear chassis bar

We then started to position the centre hoop so we could fab the platforms for it to sit on

We moved to the front then as we had no where to mount our tension rods and anti roll bar so we fabbed a new front chassis section from scratch

I cant think of the exact figures but i think it was like 780ish before we started...
But itl actualli probaly be a little heavier...
However a lot more ponies under the hood will compensate delightfully :D

when completed this car will prob weigh a bit more due to some of the ideas we're doing like the rear mounted radiator

It's update time !!! The Need for Speed D-Mac '86 is coming along very nicely at MCNSPORT HQ. Let's take a look at some of the interesting details of the build so far......

I wanted a way to be able to add caster to the front suspension without pulling the wheel forward so we got these tops made up and welded in place ... simple but effective!

The scuttle or wiper panel has been removed and the roll cage has been extended to the strut tops and reinforced further with swagged plates. I love swagged plates like these, they look so cool :-)

The passenger side also gets this treatment. Here you can also see the air intake for the heater has been sealed up along with the bulkhead for the AC pipes. No AC in this hachi!

We have started to fab the chassis mount for the track control arms. These should be fully finished in the next update.

The rear end has seen most of our attention. We have decided to go with a rear four link. Three forward facing links and a panhard bar for various reasons. One of them being the position of the fuel cell behind the passenger seat (car is RHD). You can see one of the mounting brackets for the cell in the picture above. Placing the cell behind the passenger seat gives us the best possible weight distribution. Oh and this is only a mock up like arm, the final one will be much nicer.

Here is a good shot of the rear section of the roll cage. You can see the tabs welded at various intervals on the main hoop section. This will be paneled off to prevent Falken tire smoke, water, dirt and flames from entering the cockpit. You can also see how the third link has been integrated into the roll cage and has four different mounting positions for different suspension setups.

More rear end detail; The original Panhard Rod mount has been removed from the chassis and 2 more have been fabbed, one on each side. They are much shorter than the original cos this car will be much lower than Toyota intended or at least the axle is. As with any live axle vehicle, the bigger the wheels you use the closer the axle gets to the floor. The chassis panhard mount remains slotted until the vehicle is dropped onto the floor and the final suspension geometry is done. At that point a tab with 3 to 4 holes in it will be welded over the slot in the correct position. Also we can see the axle has been triangulated for strength, we'll take a closer look at that two pictures below.

This is the rear most structural part of our AE86 chassis. if we bend this we are after hitting hard! The bolt flange you see welded on is just for mounting on our rotisserie but the same flange will be used to mount the removal bumper bars front and rear.

Here we can see the axle triangulation. I don't think this much torque has been put through an AE86 before especially with only 3 forward axle links. So to prevent the axle twisting we strengthened it at its weakest point.

Time to drool! Here are the Work Meister S1's in 17x10 with negative 39 offset. The most gangster wheels ever to be fitted to a hachi ! Big thank you to Work Wheels for their support and enthusiasm for this project

The powerplant is finally at MCNSPORT HQ. A Hayward Rotary built Bridgeported 13B.

Here you can see our amazing MCN / AVO AE86 Rear Coilovers. The best AE86 shock absorbers on the market shall be used to transmit 500BHP to the pavement.

The majority of the roof skin has been removed and will be replaced with our FRP roof skin. The section behind the centre hoop will have a drop vent to provide air for the rear mounted radiator.

The new disposable rear is ready ahead of time. It's a complete clam shell style mould of a JDM spec ae86 rear with tail lights and all in place. This will make wall rubbing inexpensive and quiet spectacular but best of all panels can be replaced easily between runs.

can i ask,with 500hp in shell that light how are you planning on getting grip,i see your running 17 x10j but still wont be easy,i have seen with damien shortt the issues on getting grip with his car with toyo t1r,but shurly a shell that light cannot put down that power and gain forward moving,hopefully im wrong,and look forward to seeing this but what u recon yourself,

Good suspension and suspension geometry is what gives you grip not the weight of your vehicle
obviously tyres play a part but its how the power is transmitted thru the tyres that is more important
It may seem to some people that extra weight gives more grip but its not true. extra weight causes lots more problems. Equally ive seen many a tank of a car smoking tyres and going nowhere
I set up Damien Shorts car for 2010 and im sure he would say himself that its now night and day compared to 2009. It gave him his first podium this year if im correct. His car is prob the same power and weight as my old sr86 and that didnt have grip problems either
Everyone said 3 years ago when ASD built the Saturn Sky that it was too powerfull and too light. It weighs 1000kg and has 800hp and 780ft.lbs of torque and now its regularly the fastest car on the grid
A 500hp ae86 this light will no doubt have no grip problems because of the time and know how that is being put into the suspension. You should know more than most its too much torque not hp that can cause problems and make a car seem loose or have no grip
One thing that i see all the time is people modifying there front hubs to get more steering angle and not realising that its giving them less forward bite
There is no disadvantage to removing weight as long as you realise you suspension needs to act differently with the lighter car

People tend not to think about grip but in this day and age ya can go nowhere without it....! Literally....! I think corner weighting is at the stage where its essantial to be competive also....!

without a doubt shortts car was a different car,when ya set it up and have no doubt you will do something special with that ae86,i never thought of the sky with 800hp and when you see the way when you put the foot down it jumps forward with grip i suppose the 86 will be no prob to ya,

The more angle ya have the less you'l be moving forward so you have to think about getting grip into the rear of the car to push yourself on....! Thats my thinking of it neway....!
Grip is a massive massive factor in drifting nowadays and you'd be very very surprised at how many lads still don't realise this....!
i cant agree with the grip issue more,, i have serous grip issues off the line and mid drift all year due to a lack of rear setup,, will be dialing in grip over the next few mounths thanks to wez and the lads at wkd

this intrest me also,as ive been considering extra lock hubs,at the min i think ive enough lock and anymore would only slow your forward motion,i dont really understand ackerman but ive been told removing this means that both wheels turn on lock exactly the same and this reduces the issue with forward motion on lock,now i dont know but would love to hear your side darren,but really other from to save you when u loose it,is there really any need for the amount of lock people are after,sorry for spam

It is an interesting topic and there has been endless threads about it, most of them are full of people claiming they know what their talking about
It seems that a lot of people have got caught up in the backwards entry bandwagon and are modifying hubs with no real idea of what their doing
Removing the ackerman means both wheels turn the same amount, most people dont remove it but reduce it, but dont really no by how much they are reducing it
There will be new hubs available for the front and rear of the silvias soon out of america and they will be the dogs bollocks. made from billet aluminium. Nobody should buy any hubs until these come out!!

I know one thing tho, if i had a choice between billet aluminium and welded steel id go for aluminium. Also, the people who are designing these hubs are race engineers who worked in F3 and NASCAR. They bought a s13 and are mapping out all the suspension points and geometry on a computer programme. Then the hubs with be machined from a block af aluminium on their cnc mill. The computer operator is the only labour on them so prices are looking very promising

Just a quick update for all you Speedhunters ! We are in a bit of a transition period here, most parts have been mocked up and are away being machined (or moulded in the case of the FRP) so let's give you a small run through what we've done before we do a much larger update in a week or two ...
As you can see from the above picture, that is a very odd place to have the steering rack in an AE86 but that's where it now calls home, right in front of the 13B motor.
Also we have cut the bulkhead or firewall on the drivers side (RHD) and that is mocked up nicely but without having our transmission back from being machined we cannot install the motor and finish the passenger side so that is cut roughly for now.

We have made a mock up manifold to get the demensions we need and it will then be sent to Martelius in Finland to make a proper one
Hopefully should have full boost at 3500 but we'll see

Welcome to the third update of the Need for Speed D-Mac 86. I have to say looking at these pictures I'm starting to get excited about this car, its shaping up to be something really special. It hard to get your head around the placement of the Owen Developments GT3582HTA turbo in this pic so lets take a look at the next.....

Now it makes sense.......well kind of. The turbo is mounted differently to the norm. We have turned it 90degrees and the exhaust now runs down the side it should on a ae86. The reason we had to do this is because of how far back the engine is mounted and being RHD everything is on the right side namely the pedals and steering column and the 60mm screamer pipe. No room left for the exhaust on that side. The Turbo we are using is pretty special, its a Owen Developments Motorsport GT3582HTA turbo with motorsport bearing and billet internal stainless heatshield and ported shroud compressor cover!!

Here you can see how we mounted the steering rack. The rack was made removable so you can take the engine out, as the engine mounts are solid to the chassis. The bolts in out tube joiners are only temporary. The tube with the 2 holes is the beginning of our oil cooler mount. Also you can see the rack spacers that we machine to give us extra travel and the block spacers that offset our inner tie rods and the half tube welded into the towers to give clearance. All this is visible in the second pic down also

Our new steering knuckles are now in their final position and eagle eyed viewers will notice the brake caliper has been moved to the rear of the disk to allow our knuckles to be mounted. I was going to machine new caliper brackets to do this but then i got the brainwave to just swap the drivers side and passenger side struts.....job done

This is the new path for our 90mm exhaust. The exhaust is now completely finished except for the tailpipe which will be made once all our aero is fitted. Big thanks to Martelius Exhausts in Finland for supplying all the parts we needed

Passenger footrest removed, you can see the completed bulkhead, transmission tunnel and exhaust tunnel. The transmission tunnel has been slightly widened because of how far back the gearbox now is. The Supra R154 transmission is in place complete with custom RX7 bellhousing adapter which allows the RX7 bellhousing to be bolted on complete and retain the RX7 Slave cylinder and clutch fork along with Flywheel, Pressure plate and Starter motor. The great design of the Carbonetic Twin plate clutch allows us to just replace the clutch centre hub to suit a R154 Supra Input shaft. The Supra gearbox is not very long so the new gearlever position suits our slightly further back driving position

Speaking of coming together.......the rear FRP shell is now mountable and so is the tailgate. The tailgate will be held in place by two tubes extending up from the chassis and mounted to our GT wing mounts. So all down force created will be transmitted to the chassis and to the tires rather than just flexing the tailgate. The GT Wing mounts should be finished in the next update

All downforce goes directly to the chassis and to the tyres. The tailgate goes between the brace and the wing mount so it is kept in place by this system also. No need for pins

I plan to run this at the Mondello PD round, it might be the only event it does here in IRL as it will have to make other appearances for Need for Speed in other countries

Here is a quick update for you guys on the Need for Speed D-Mac '86. Our mock up exhaust manifold has been sent to Martelius exhausts in Finland along with our front and rear coolant pipes to be ceramic coated. Here is a shot of the new Martelius manifold being welded in Finland.

And here is the finished product. I think you'll agree they have done a great job and the new manifold will be at MCNSPORT HQ very shortly for final fitment.

As mentioned above Martelius offer a ceramic coating service. The two treatments we will be using on the D-Mac '86 are a 'Thermal Barrier' and a 'dispersant'. The manifold and eventually the turbine housing of the Owens Developments turbo will be coated with the 'Thermal Barrier' which not only lowers the under bonnet temperatures but also prevents the loss of energy from the exhaust gases to the manifold and housing through heat absorption. The second 'dispersant' treatment will be applied to the intercooler and inlet manifold etc and this actually improves the metals ability to disperse heat and should lead to much cooler intake temps. The coolant pipes will also get coated, the hot pipe from the engine to the radiator with a 'thermal barrier' and the cold pipe from the radiator to the engine with the 'dispersant'

While the chassis was being painted, it gave us a chance to prep the motor and transmission for final fitment. For me no engine compares to rotary when at this stage. The contrasting colours of irons and rotor housings is just so cool!! We were working pretty hard as you can see from all the abandoned spanners ! LOL!

Here we are at paint. Every process of this build is done in house so this is in my make shift spray booth in the corner of the shop. Thats is Dan in the back round who does all the painting here. The underneath of the car resembles swiss cheese from all the drilling of spot welds holding brackets that we deemed unnecessary.

With the underneath painted its was time to flip it over and paint inside and under the bonnet. Feels great to get to this stage and get all the fab work done and now when something gets bolted on it can actually be tightened and wont be coming off again, hopefully for a long time.

A bit of work alright, a good friend took care of it for us. Supra bellhousing was machined down to the correct depth and a alu plate was welded onto it. Then the bolt pattern for the RX7 bellhousing was drilled into the plate, then tapped so it bolts straight on
Carbonetic took care of the clutch, using a Twin plate carbon RX7 clutch kit with a Supra centre hub
The engine is bridgeported yes:cool:

Okay, the Need for Speed D-Mac '86 is back to its build bay in the shop which is getting more and more untidy as the weeks go on! Hopefully it should come together quickly and we can tidy up round here. You might notice the front tube extension has not been painted. This is because at the time the car was going for paint we did not have the intercooler and could not make the brackets to hold it in place and also the brackets for the bumper bar need to be made and we need all the aero on for that part of the build.

The rear axle is now painted and located with our 4 link system. It's hard to beat black and white.

Our custom top link is now installed. This should allow us to fine tune our setup quickly on track, not like the original two upper links that are very awkward to access. You can see the BOSCH pump and bullet filter installed ready to be covered by the fuel cell.

The tunnel and bulkhead were just second to the steering in the time consumption stakes but now theyOur MCN/AVO rear coilovers are ready to transmit more power to the tarmac than any other AE86 drift car in history. We wanted to run standard and just off the shelf AE86 suspension rather than a custom trick suspension setup just so we can prove just how good our '86 suspension is.

Likewise at the front. We are using the MCN/AVO adjustable front inserts inside the original struts with weld on coilover conversion tubes.

This has been the most head wrecking part of the build, the custom steering. I hate and love this steering rack in equal measure. It took quite a large amount of time to get everything working the way we wanted it to, but if it all works out it should perform really well.

We made a custom steering column so we could throw away the over complicated Toyota one. A new gear lever has been made for the Supra transmission and we modified the 16 inch ASD vertical e-brake lever to just the right position for me.

It's update time again Speedhunters and a lot of work has gone on since last time. When Paddy arrives we scurry around to get stuff out of the way and stuff in the way that we want included. He seems to have caught that moment quite well.

The Owen Development's turbo is becoming a more permanent part of the build and very shortly it will be bolted in place for the final time. The downpipe has been made with the intercooler piping currently being done. The oil and water lines are also nearly finished and we just got to fabricate the intake pipe and then it is complete.

Wiggens clamps will be used on both hot and cold sides of the intercooler and since Paddy was here the screamer pipe is done and attached to the Tial 60mm wastegate.

The racing dry cell battery has been mounted under the passenger seat for optimal weight distribution.

A lot going on in this picture, our carbon AE86 dash has been fitted and equipped with Defi gauges and controller. You can see we made a custom steering column and got rid of the ugly Toyota one. Pedals are now in, as are the fuel lines and the ASD e-brake has been positioned to my preference. I have decided to install the aluminium centre partition panels for testing, these were made as templates for the carbon fibre panels and will be replaced with carbon fibre at a later date.

This gives you a better shot of the aluminium partition panels and fuel cell firewall. The fuel cell will be filled through the quarter window. The rear radiator is now bolted in place and the coolant pipes are also connected.

The pipes returned from Martelius in Finland, with their ceramic thermal barrier and dispersant coatings. One is a matt black finish and the other is gloss black which looks pretty cool. You can see the fuel cell filler mounted through the quarter window here also.

One change in the suspension is the custom lower control arms we are making. Because of the amount of steering angle we have, the wheel now hits the tension rod if placed in the normal ae86 position so we are making a custom "A" arm which will give us the clearance needed.

The quarter windows are polycarbonate and have three ducts per side to take air to the rear mounted radiator during forward motion. The three vertical slots that are marked out but not cut are for taking in air when the car is sideways.

With the rear spoiler removed you can see how the GT Wing mounts. The spoiler will be slotted and place over the mount so the wing stays come neatly out of the spoiler with no visable mounts.

Welcome to update number eight of our crazy AE86 project! This time we are not just going to look at the new details on the build, but we are also going to take a look at the finished product via Shift2 Unleashed. I love this first pic from Paddy, it captures the real presence that the car seems to have around the shop, it seems no one can pass by without doing a double take.

And so to the in-game car parked here at the famous Eau Rouge at the Spa Francorchamps circuit. It's so cool for me to be able to see the finished product so early in the build, normally all the images are in my head. The timeline for this project was very tight and we did not have the luxury of a long schedule like Vaughn's RTR-X project. The car does differ slightly from the real world version as it has developed and we have problem solved. The main development was me completely wrecking the car at a Prodrift event and being left with two options:
1: Throw away the chassis or 2: to remove an awful lot of metal and built something crazy. So here we will also cover some of the differences between the in game D-Mac86 and the real world D-Mac86 and the reasoning behind them.

This looks so cool! One of the main differences is the front bumper. The N2 aero is designed to work with stock bumpers, in this case a Sprinter Trueno Zenki bumper. This bumper was designed to keep a normally aspirated 4AGE and its radiator cool but as the 13B Turbo will produce so much more heat and have an intercooler we demanded much more air flow than the Trueno Zenki bumper could provide. What we are using is only an update away ...

(This car is NOT for Formula D) I just recently returned from Electronic Arts in Vancouver, Canada where I took on ALMS driver Tommy Milner in an Autolog battle and played the game as much as I could. I of course took the D-Mac86 to drift at Irwindale as well as the infamous Ebisu. It would be amazing to be able to take the real car to America and Japan sometime.

Getting the car on the ground was a big milestone and so was getting our Work Meisters back from powder coating, now in a stealthy satin black finish.

A lot of bits and bobs have been done to the engine as it gets close to firing up for the first time. Plugs, plug leads, coils, fuel lines, fuel pressure regulator, K&N oil filter and screamer pipe have now all been fitted.

For the brakes, we plan to do a brake upgrade on the real car once we get it running as we are expecting it to be quiet fast. Power to weight ratio is looking pretty impressive from the corner weight figures we have.

The biggest difference in the two cars is at the rear and anyone who has been following the build will know why ...

... the rear mounted radiator. Because of this modification to gain the best possible weight distribution, a few things had to be different to any AE86 we have seen before. We needed to get air to the radiator so we decide to make a custom roof and quarter windows. Another thing I wanted to do was make the rear end more crash proof, as lets face it drift cars are meant to hit/rub/scrape things with the rear. So our collapsible bumper bar is now in place holding the FRP rear end on and it's all easily replaceable if and when we take it all off.

The rear Falken tyres are absolutely massive at 275/40/17. They look huge on the small '86 chassis!

Our rear ride height is now set and we will start to locate our axle links for the geometry we require very soon. Another question mark I had was would I be able to run the exhaust out the rear or would I have to turn it down underneath the car. Well it looks like we can get it out the rear bumper so I'm looking forward to some pictures with big rotary flames from Paddy. One of the coolest things of the in-game car is the rotary sound. It sounds like a real bridgeport and pops and bangs on the overrun when you lift off the throttle. It really shows the attention to detail that has gone into this game and my hat goes off to all the NFS crew.

And so on to the front suspension where we have spent most of our time lately. Here is the final steering angle we have ended up with.

Here is how it looks from the front. Another addition from the last update is our front support bars. They are made from a very light material so that if the unthinkable happens they will collapse instead of moving the strut top out of line. Then the front tube extension can be cut off and replaced with a new one. The other purpose of the front support bars is to act as support for the front wing/fender and headlight covers as well as mounting the front bonnet/hood pins.

The change in front steering ackerman angle and the amount of steering angle have caused problems with the trailing or outside wheel. It is now turning so much the tension rod had to be moved and we now have to make four lock stops for this car (two per wheel) as it is trying to kick or go over centre which is rare on a front steer steering rack

That's me and my Dad looking on as Paddy does his thing. Very little work left to do in the cockpit now. Biggest job is the line lock for holding the front brakes to allow us to warm the rears without putting excess stress on the car.

let us know how the electric steering works out darren as i have one sitting here for to fit wen i make a start on building my ae86. works well in alot of rally cars but would like to hear how it works for drifting.

Ps unit has been installed and is working. No time to drive the car as i have to leave for FD in the morning. Really hope this works out as planned....

We have a dash mounted knob that varies the assist given by the motor and turned funny clockwise it switches the motor off. So hopefully we can dial in the correct amount of feel

We have improved the rear radiator ducting to try and bring water temps down a bit. I think it turned out pretty well

Tear down after awesomefest......
Unfortunately we had electric power steering problems which prevented us from drifting like we wanted to. We are now converting to electrofluid steering so that should solve the problem

We also had a spigot bearing collapse on us in Mallory so a new one needs to be installed and the engine and box have to be removed to do this
And we are coverting to electic water pump, which should be a better system for the rear mounted rad
1 more test session before we head to BDC Silverstone in September

wats the bit of twine tied to tie rod for lad?
saw this over in mallory and it looked silly fast.
What rack were you using before this new one?

what kind of problems did you find with the electric steering set up darren? i had started fitting a corsa one to my ae86 but maybe need a change of plan now? alot of rally men seem to be using them with no problems so would be intresting to know.

It works on a rally car perfect because theres on need to turn the wheels as quick....! Electric power steering won't unravil itself quick enough for drifting....!

How does the likes of electric steering fair out on a honda s2000 while drifting or does any one who drifts one remove them if they cause problems?
maybe i missed something but Whats the reason for trying all those electric units??? why not just put in a normal hydraulic rack??

Basically what Robbie said. In rallying you never leave go of the wheel but while drifting you rely on the castor to self centre the wheel and the resistance of the electric motor on the colum doesnt allow it to return fast enough
We fitted a controller and increased castor and still didnt work out
For normal racing or rallying its a good system tho

What power steering are you gonna go for? I think the ae86 power steering rack has more turns lock to lock than a manual ae86 one, I'd need to check tho, and I'm not sure if a quick rack can be fitted to the power assisted one either but would need to look at the differences.

The ae86 manula rack has more teeth in it so thats what is better for drifting
Quick rack isnt really ideal as it has no extra teeth machined in it so you cannot spacer the tie rods
We are going to use mr2 power steering pump on this now
