View Full Version : The 2011 driftireland SR86 (Mark Willis)

We decided that one driftireland skidcar wasnt enough!
So we've taken the challenge of building another one!!
The driftireland SR86
A little intro first!
The nut behind this wheel who i'm hoping will kick-ass is Mark Willis..
No need to go into detail but he's seriously talented in a car and
know's a thing or two about putting them together too!
His choice of wheels is an AE86 Corolla, as the lightweight compact car should prove
quite competitive once powered sufficiently, and the easiest way to do this we
figured was to replace the 16v 4AGE with an SR20DET..
We're building this car on a little more of a budget than the S14, and if it works and
proves to be some bit competitive we're going to build a better car for next year, with
a new shell and full weld-in cage!
*A quick thank-you to Dave at Japanese Performance (www.japaneseperformance.ie) for the engine and other bits and pieces,
and to Gem for all the hard work, knowledge and late nights!*
So carrying on with the build, here's pic's of the car before work commenced!

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1488.jpg
We then stripped the interior of everything unnecessary

Late night engine bay cleaning!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1500.jpg
Willis then cut the front off the car, makes it alot easier for engine in and outs!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1543.jpg
I then did a quick job of the arches as Willis is only running CBY arches for now!

Ok we're back! We havnt been near this car for a while now and with
Prodrift quickly approaching, we're going to be VERY busy!
Here's an update including some of what we did last year and as of 2 days ago!
The steering rack mounts needed grinding to get the SR20 lump as low down as possible!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1594.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1596.jpg
That should do!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1600.jpg
Next we made engine mounts to hold the SR20 to the AE86 subframe
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1604.jpg
Making the AE86 mounts, into SR20 mounts!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1619.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1607.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1608.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1616.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1632.jpg
Engine mounts made, and test fitting into car!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1633.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1638.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1639.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1641.jpg
Gem starting to make up the gearbox mount
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1642.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1645.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1651.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1652.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1653.jpg
Gearbox mount finished, its actually alot stronger than it looks!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1660.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1663.jpg
Just like that! A coat of black will finish it nicely!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1666.jpg
Willis then started to weld in the new tunnel
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1677.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1687.jpg
Next on the list was welding custom 'traction brackets' onto the vanette axle, if we did it right,
the car should have lots of grip! If not then pulling that face really wasnt worth it!!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF1708.jpg
Jay Rockett
14-03-11, 00:44
We needed to add more to the cage to pass regulations and to add some strength to the car!
So we set about welding in a rear X-bar
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2072.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2078.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2084.jpg
Done! We also cut out the rear shelf and welded in a bar between the rear shock mounts
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2088.jpg
Like so!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2091.jpg
Then the driver's door bars
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2095.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2099.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2101.jpg
And complete!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2109.jpg
Passenger door bars
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2110.jpg
And some weld shots! Not bad for first time!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2111.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2113.jpg
With the larger tunnel now in place, we had to make a custom hydraulic handbrake mount,
separating the lever from the cylinder via a small diameter steel tube!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2117.jpg
Turned out quite well and leaves plenty of room for the gearlever!
A quick lick of paint and she will be MINT!!
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2119.jpg
http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/gg122/jamierockett/SR86%20build%20thread/DSCF2123.jpg
Thats all for now folks, more next weekend!

Haha! Well going by the rules and regs still up on the Prodrift website they are, aslong as the bend is braced with the door bars which is what we did!
Just a quick question, are dash dodgers allowed in Prodrift now?
people have been asking for rule updates for the last 3months if they are going to change the rules now id say they will cut atleast 40% of the entrys to round one!!! but we will wait and see

Not having a go at Ye but Ye might have to move ye're door bars up a bit to the apex of the bend I had to change mine the last time I was in scrutiny they wouldn't pass it because it wasn't on the apex of the bend.nice build tho looking forward to seeing it in action

Yeah i know thats whats written in the reg's but iv seen a few cars where the door bars were welded in LOWER than where we put ours in, the reason we welded them in that place was firstly to actually allow Willis to get in and out, not smack his elbow while steering and also because we figured welding around a bar at the bend, the heat from the weld might weakin the bar??
waaaheyyyyy the finger is finally out!!!:D

I agree with you I mentioned that to them when in scrutiny and the still wanted the bar moved which ment cutting off the old bar and welding in a new one which would have further weakened it.it's a pain getting in and out alright.yeah I have seen other cars with door bars lower but that's a different story like some cars aloud have roof lining and others made remove it
Christ on a bike!
Some update.
Whos the welder on the cage? Some tastey welding,Credit where due,RoCo spec stuff there.
Gonna be some car when its out!

Sorry we've been up to our tits with the new site, building cars and Prodrift, our build threads havnt had the attention they deserve!
We finished off Willis's SR-AE86 the night before Prodrift Rd1 Ennis and he struggled in practise and qualifying with what seemed like a miss-fire and no power what-so ever! So as soon as we got back we changed the turbo for a T28 and the AFM for a bigger, RB20 one, checked over a few things and sent it down to TDP.ie (www.tdp.ie) to get a NIStune fitted and mapped!
After a few things were fixed, fuel pressure regulater was nackered and some extra wiring was needed, Robbie rang me with the results! It went from 120 flywheel bhp to 325bhp, and 312lb ft or torque! We couldnt believe it as a few of us were throwing down figures we thought it may get, and none were anywhere NEAR 325bhp!!
A quick rip up the road at the garage clarified that 325bhp in a lightweight Corolla is scary!!!
Anywho, a pic from Rd1 Ennis and the di-SR86 in Robbie's capable hands at TDP.ie (www.tdp.ie)

Ha no, because we're still not happy with how it looks! Debating what kit to run, what colour to spray it etc..
But now that most of the kit that was on it is wrecked from Punchestown we'll have to do something with it, and as soon as we do we'll take some nice pics of it!
But in the meantime, here's a few pics of it in action in Rd.2 Fermoy

Willis is a hero in the badger 2!!!!!
some unreal work and hardship gone into this car an all I can think is it must have payed off..
Yes yes. Well done to all involved in this car. And serious driving by willis... Jay was right, he said to me over a year ago to wait until willis gets out and behind the wheel. I think his very words were "he's just going to win everything"
It's certainly looking that way. Fair play lads keep it up

its a bit rediculous realy, i remember going to watch him racing strykers at the phoenix park races...stalled on the start line, spun coming onto the straight on another lap...and still came onto the straight on the last lap in first?! serious driver in fairness to the gayboy!

Repairing the diSR86 for Prodrift rd. 5 - The Final's - Mondello Park
This is what faced me a few days ago..

And after a few LATE nights i managed to get it looking somewhat respectable!

Wish us luck for the last round where Mark Willis is hoping to have a repeat of the good luck had in rd. 4!
I'll update this fully next week with all the repair pic's and a review of the Prodrift weekend we have ahead of us!! holla
