Thought i might as well throw up what im doing on here,
After a run on a dyno a few weeks ago i found out that my current fuel pump wasnt up to the job and needed changing. I had planned to upgrade my fuel system in a while, but this kinda pushed things forward so its started now :)
anyways, this is my car
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/DSC_4306.jpg
and a pretty cool shot of one of my wheels on the dyno
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/IMG_6494.jpg
anyway, the plan is:
Greddy style plenum bored out to 70mm
N1 TB
-6an fuel rail
8mm fuel lines
aeromotive fpr
1200cc injectors
2 x z32 fuel filters
2ltr swirl pot
bosch 044 external fuel pump
walbro 255 in tank
also upgrading my brakes at the min too,
R32 GTR calipers upfront
330mm grooved discs
322mm rear discs
R33 gtst rear calipers
s13 shoes
braided lines
over sized ds2500 pads
heres the parts ive gotten so far,

what needed to go:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22052009104.jpg
after a bit of work:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22052009109.jpg
I took out more than was needed, just behind where the tb bolts on was a really wierd shape and wasnt going to help airflow.
im making my own fuel rail,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/26052009117-1.jpg
post cost more than the material lol
front discs compaired to the gtr ones ive been running,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/01062009131.jpg
stuck in some of these
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02062009142.jpg
in here last night
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02062009140.jpg
heres a few other parts that arrived in the last couple of days,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02062009144.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/04062009165.jpg
ive got to meassure up the injectors now to see what way to bore out the fuel rail. Gonna make up some alu. mounts for the bosch and both fuel filters.
more soon...
jaysus, good to see your going for your own approch on bits! what did it make on the dyno...and whens its going back??
looking foward to seein how that rail comes out, whats that ''FJ0 racing product''?
fupping hell the size of the breaks

314bhp @ 1bar and dangeriously lean everywhere. wasnt happy at all. All the work will be starting after the 17th, nct is that day. and everything will be done working and tuned by 20th of july. has to be lol
@Delab - its so i can run low impedance injectors. its harder to get high imp. ones when you go big, you can but it just takes a bit longer to get your hands on them
lookin well hun!
Breaks the size of ur head!

here ya go mate, only good one i have at the min is from when she was still in japland
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/94180SX303764.jpg
The turbo is a hks3037s, as far as im able to find out its the same at the garrett GT3076R with a slightly differnt housing. its the reason i need such big feckin injectors :D
lookin well hun!
Breaks the size of ur head!
HAHA
thanks carlie, nice as always :p
Those wheels are wet dream material lad.
That turbo is savage, your lookin at 400+ when she's finished??
Also can u send me a pm on how much that inlet plenum is, im half thinking of beefing up my SR, 380 isnt enough :o
looking well dude
can u make rails to suit any car if so ill get stiv to contact u wit wat i might need done
yep should be able to dude, i would prob need your injectors though to make sure that i was boring out to the proper size for the O ring on it.
stiv has my number anyways, i need to get my arse up to him next week actually - thanks for reminding me lol
@ Frankae86 - yeah the wheels were what made me pick that car mate, they are savage and pretty rare from what ive heard. It should be over 400bhp when done, Im not setting my mind on any figures but i want the car running safe and to its potential. then il be happy ;)

ya dude ill be getting injectors soon myself and stiv r talking about fitting stantard evo5 injectors to the skyline custom making a rail or trying to locate one and running e85:D

My god there're shiny ha!
And yeah thats a big aul turbo alrite, nice one!
Looking forward to seeing what it puts out when she's right!

sounds like a good plan! what size are the evo injectors? 500ccish? and that would be doable i think dude ;)
e85 ftmfw!

think stiv said there 550,s most evo owners throwing them out so should get a set cheap:D
e85 for track ftw 95ron for the road as easy to get id hate having to plan all my routes out
time for a small update,
The car finally passed the nct (after its 4th feckin attempt!) so now its back in the shed for the fuelling bits for be stuck on.
I did the 5second lazy eye conversion to the car, im not sure if i prefer it this way or not. (sorry for the crap phone pics)
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/17062009177-1.jpg
a better pic of the front from a meet last weekend,
http://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y204/subzero182/SXOC%20Meet/SXOC005.jpg
Ive swapped fuel pumps, the walbro is a tiny little yoke.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/07062009167.jpg
i got my front brakes fitted and braided lines fitted.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/18062009189.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/17062009183.jpg
330mm discs and still lots for room to spare.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/18062009190.jpg
gotta say im loving the coverage of the pad on the disc. it sits over the entire surface area.
Its only the fronts at the min but that'll change over the weekend.
I broke 3 strong bars trying to get off the hub nuts on the rear so had to get a loan of this from work.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/08062009170.jpg
Its a 4foot mega torque wrench and costs a small fortune so thankfully it opened the bastids and didnt break too.
Il be machining up a few parts for the plenum in work tomorrow and maybe get the fuel rail done on saturday.
Il wire in the injector driver over the weekend when i get my hands on some solder. I want to fit it before sticking in the new injectors to make sure its working right before i pull everything off. it says it can work with both high and low impedance injectors, so i guess il find out soon.
I gotta get this stupid cat thing off now too and stick back on my proper exhaust. Im waiting for my swirl pot to arrive next week and gotta order up my fuel line, going with hydraulic hose for now. Il go with the blingy stuff when i can afford it. and i should be picking up my new gear box next weekend ;)
Those callipers arent gonna be caught for room with those spacers either!
lol no, but those are the small ones.
Gotta make up some 35mm spacers for my track wheels.
I got a bit further with my brakes over the weekend.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/20062009191.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/20062009192.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/20062009193.jpg
i couldnt get the lower joint out so just took the arm off, much easier.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/21062009197.jpg
It only took me about an hour and a half to get to this point, which i thought was pretty good going after hearing some others accounts of trying to get the rear hubs off. But things were going a bit too smoothly.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22062009199.jpg
with the backplates and shoes on and i was happy enough with myself. Then realised i was ment to cut the dust shield out of it for the bigger discs :annoyed: after some swearing and grinding,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22062009200.jpg
I have to get the calipers ready for the brake kit next and then get the whole lot bolted back on the car tomorrow night and have a go at getting the handbrake cables run.
I made up 4 of these little lads after work. I had planned on making them from stainless but it went missing from where i had it hid in work so its made from so bit of scrap steel i found in the bin. Il get them zinc plated or powered coated during the week.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22062009198.jpg
time for an update..
I wanted to get the injector driver wired in before i pulled off the plenum to make that it was put in right, just to rule out this incase something crops up when i go about starting her again. Ive mounted it on the firewall and went about wiring it in.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11111111111111.jpg
i love wiring :wack:

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/26062009206.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/26062009207.jpg
all in, wrapped and tucked up nicely :)
my new TB
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009224.jpg
since i had to bore out my plenum to 70mm it obviously wasnt ment to work with a throttle body this size so naturally it wont bolt directly on :annoyed:
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009225.jpg
if it wasnt awkward it wouldnt be fun eh? im going to make up a 10mm thick adapotor plate to make the 2 fit together.
theres a nice difference between the N1 and 180 TB
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009233.jpg
I got the plenum pulled off next
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009231.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009232.jpg
i was a bit supprised at just a how big it is.
and the greddy copy one test fitted,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009235.jpg
and quite possibly the best thing about the new plenum
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009236.jpg
i can actaully put my hand on the oil filter!!
id did a small test fit with the injectors in and some fuel rail and it sits alot higher that the standard rail. When its all i dont know if my strut brace will fit over it, if it does its going to be tight id say
Some of the final parts arrived today too
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/29062009240.jpg
To make the throttle body fit onto the plenum properly i had to make up an adaptor plate.
So i went into work with this,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/05072009260.jpg
i didnt have as much time to use the machine centre as i would have liked so i only got to machine out the main bore on it before i had stick up the fuel rail to bore that out.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/05072009262.jpg
When i got home i finished the adaptor plates off,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/16072009278.jpg
i ended up needing 2 plates with varying off centre holes to mate them together properly. I had hoped in the begininng to only machine up one plate, but the bolt patterns of the plenum and TB werent going for that.
the first plate went on with a few modified m8's
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/16072009280.jpg
along with some liquid gasket to keep everything air tight
for some reason i stopped taking pics at this point, but heres the whole lot bolted together.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/17072009282.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/17072009281.jpg
After that was done i went about sticking on the rest of my rear brakes,
after reading all stories about lads in the past fitting the shoes i was supprised how easily it all went and that the handbrake cables lined up so well. but then again they are s13 cables so they should have lined up lol
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/04072009253.jpg
I need to tighten them up a bit still, ive got to pull the handbrake to almost vertical to get any real bite.
After that some un-needed electronics were pulled from the car,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/06072009264.jpg
my knackered profec A and hks vpc out of the way. Ive fitted a new gizzmo controller instead and seems good so far but its only been just set up to a bare min. for now.
Then came the re-running of the fuel lines and fitting the 044 and swirl pot.
after some debating with myself i settled on putting the pot here,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22072009290.jpg
i ended up being the only real place it would work for me.
the 044 is mounted below the pot in the spare wheel well, there supposed to be mounted below the level of the pot? or so ive been told anyways.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22072009289.jpg
for now its held in pikey spec with some cable ties, but ive got some alu. brackets in the making but just didnt have the time needed to get them done. But its solid as a rock where it is for now. Ive hard wired both pumps to the battery too
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22072009291.jpg
i didnt take any pics of all the shitty work involved in fitting the new plenum but what a pain in the arse of a job  a good bit more involved than i was expecting.
This is how everything looks at the min,
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22072009292.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22072009293.jpg
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/22072009294.jpg
i tried to keep everything tidy as i went along and ripped out as many T pieced vacuum lines and un needed bits as i went.
I got the car finished monday morning and it was mapped on the way upto mondello by stiv, it wasnt what youd call smooth with a couple of small fcuk ups on the way :annoyed: boost pipe came off and a quick fix cable tie got cought under the TB and held the throttle open :wack: but once we got that sorted it was mapped to run safe to 1.2bar.
once up at mondello things were going great for about 8 or 10 laps or so. I came into the pits to let stuff cool down a little when someone spotted a puddle growing under the engine. I popped the bonnet to see ethenol pissing from one of my injectors
I thought it was an O ring burst at first but after swapping around different O rings on the injector and moving it around to different positions on the rail it seems like theres something up with the injector, no matter what seal was on it or where in the rail it was positioned it kept pissing out fuel :( so that ended my day pretty quickly. I was pissed but things could have been alot worse.
so for now the car is back sitting outside my garage waiting for me to pull out the injector to see if i can see what exactly has happened with it.
A plumped in fire extingusher has now been bumped upto the top of my shopping list
Jaysus man thats sum savage fabrication skills:eek: Cool thread:cool:
Thats savage unfortunate lad but she looks fair tidy under the bonnet.
Were you happy with the torque figures and running on the E85 and new setup ?
you are a mad man, but i would give my left nut to be able to fabricate my own shit like that, i'd say dissapointment but that probably isnt a strong enough word, but thats cars for ye.
well done thats all i'll say
who mapped ur car for you??
Thats savage unfortunate lad but she looks fair tidy under the bonnet.
Were you happy with the torque figures and running on the E85 and new setup ?
Its not even close to being mapped fully yet cos i ran out of time, but even from how its running at the min im loving it. Im not sure if its the new boost controller or new intake setup or a combo of both but there is a shit lot less lag. As soon as i can il get a full map on it and stick it back on the rollers and see what its putting out :)
@ meego1- yep like podge said stiv mapped it

thats a serious engine bay mate.. fair play
cheers dave :)
things arent looking too good with the car at the min :( . My water pump is knackered and my tubro doesnt seem to be doing much better
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/01082009310.jpg
it was grand before its last day out in mondello, no oil around the turbine and only a little play. Now theres a nice bit of oil caked onto it and about 3mm of forward/back play.
ive got 2 weeks off now and with the timing of these fuck ups im thinking of pulling out the engine during the week and getting it ready for some nicer internals and a different turbo
Thats a pure balls lad, what turbo would you go for ?
im not sure yet to be honest lad. Im looking into getting this rebuilt, just to see how much. And looking at some holsets. The hx30's only seem good for 350ish and the hx35s are bastards to spool with a sr. So god knows yet
Ya ive heard that alrite, Dont go for a big laggy yolk anyway.
What about rebuilding your own ?
i think im gonna def be rebuilding it now man. Its a hks3037 tubby which is basically a gt3076r with a hks exhaust housing. but for some fecking reason its a t25. Ive read thats its a t3 but decided to measure it the flange and it is def not a t3.
Il have to wait till 2m to ring a couple of places but gonna be around the 600 mark for a rebuild i think
yep ;)
gotta get some prices on it 2m. Engine is coming out at the weekend for a full rebuild. Gonna keep the compression as high as we can and let the e85 keep things right
yep ;)

few complains about e85 lately wit it not being consietent just be careful tats the reason my skyline is not mapped for it yet;)
shit. i hadnt heard that. has anything blown up cos of a "bad batch" of fuel?
shit. i hadnt heard that. has anything blown up cos of a "bad batch" of fuel?
nothing blew up yet but robbies car was down 300 brake a while back due to bad fuel and dean reillys time attack car was running like a bag of spanners from it:eek:
I said it to a lad the last day i was thinking about E85 for next year and he said the exact same thing. He said the fuel can be inconsistant. He runs 101octane so i might just do the same...

thats not good. if thats the case youd really want a wideband o2 and knock sensor stuck on there the whole time to keep an eye on things.
if it was a lower octane mix its a wonder it didnt melt anything cos most on e85 are running mega advance

road cars drift cars the less stuff in them to go wrong the better tats y i binned a load a shit in the 13 and run it on petrol

yeah agree with ya there alright, but id look at e85 as good thing to have ;)
I brought the car into the garage last night to get started her. Ive been finishing of the wiring in the garage during the week. ( I built it last year and ive been putting it on long finger till now:rolleyes:)
All i can say is god bless good lights
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/09082009332.jpg
Its brighter than working outside.
Anyway after a few hours work the car is looking like this now
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/10082009337.jpg
its a good few bits taken off when there all piled together
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/10082009341.jpg
The engine mounts are seized to fuck. Its taken me about an hour and a half to the pass side undone and ive broken 2 spanners trying to get the other side off and it still isnt budging.
Anyone got any suggestions?
I drained my gearbox and was happy to see sweet feck all swarf on the sump plug.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/09082009330.jpg
Its gonna be up for sale pretty soon so nice to see its still healthy
Once i get that mount open the engine will be out and ready to be stripped tomorrow night :D
With a good dose of heat i finally got the mount off this morning and after bout 20mins the car was looking like this
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009342.jpg
then when i split the box i found something a little supprising. As far as i had been told there was a standard fly wheel and an exedy single plate in the car.
this doesnt look to standard to me
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009343.jpg
and this kinda speaks for itself
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009344.jpg
what sort of torque are these clutchs good for?
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009348.jpg
I dont know what the standard width of the clutch plate usually is but its 8mm thick now and the grooves are about 5./.6mm deep from the surface.
anyone know if this is good or bad?
Theres a nice white build up on the turbo thanks to the e85, its not really clear from the pic but if you rub your finger along no mankly black carbon build up.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009350.jpg
and heres how she stand now, car put away for a few weeks and the block ready to be stripped after i meself a cuppa tea :D
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009351.jpg
Ive got the engine fully stripped and ready for skim and bore.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/12082009372.jpg
Theres a good bit of build up on the pistons, the car was running stupidly rich when it came over first though so maybe this has something to do with it

taking off the turbo from the manifold was a right pain in the arse!! How the hell are you ment to get at this nut?
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/11082009360.jpg
its under the main body of the turbo and the only way i could get it was the cut a 12mm spanner down to about 30mm long and use a screw driver to hit it out. There must be an easier way to get to it surely? The only other way i could see was to split the turbo but that seems a bit feckin much to get it.
i pulled off the front of the turbo to have a little looksee, looks like there is a slight oil issue alright.

more updates
All the shinny forged bits, new pumps and gaskets and my rebuild turbo are all on there way back to me now and due here this week. So things can start moving now again soon i hope. I dont want to leave it too long before i go back at the block so ive some chance of remembering where everything goes.
While im waiting on the bits im going to go at lapping my valves. A valve spring compressor was something ive never bought cos i never really wanted to mess about with heads. But this is the second time ive had to borrow one in a few weeks lol
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/30082009466.jpg
The seats arent too bad, but the inlet sides are much cleaner than the exhaust. Which makes sense i suppose.

same with the valves, but theres a good bit of sh1t built up on the intake valves too
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/30082009474.jpg
ive bagged and labeled all the springs, collets and retainers to try keep everything together and back where it belongs.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/30082009475.jpg
I put my head gasket on the block too just to be sure its right. But theres an extra opening it that my neither my block or old mhg have.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/31082009480.jpg
It was ment to be a redtop mhg but im guessing that its for the blacktop? I know there ment to be one in the same but will the bit over hanging off the block be an issue?
Another thing ive been looking at is my steering rack. Theres always seemed to be a build up of oil and greece on the drivers side of the steering rack. Is there a seal prone to going on the rack or is this just normal build up from random bits of oil dripping from the block from filter changes etc?
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/31082009478.jpg

My steering rack looks similar to this colm, think its just oil from a filter change:)
Looks like you're having fun with that lol, loving the DIY parts :)
Have to laugh at Robbie@TDP LOSING 300bhp due to bad E85, id like to have 300bhp to lose in the first place lol :D

yeah id heard something about that alright...that thing of his has crazy power
This arrived on my doorstep the week before last

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/01092009483.jpg
Fully rebuilt and looking brand new. Ive never seen a recon'd turbo before but it looks like its never been near an engine. Some new studs and gaskets along with it too. Id say its not going to be fun getting it back on the manifold with all the hassle i had taking it off
I spent all last week waiting on parts that never turned up so I did some donkey work to keep myself busy. Lapping valves, god what a boring job. But it does make a nice difference
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/01092009488.jpg
and then 4hours later
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/07092009503.jpg
Some of my parts finally found there way here after spending about a week in customs. I had hoped they might have got in without the taxman noticing but no such luck. I ended up paying a big total €55.02 vat on all of these :D
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/07092009506.jpg
I got my replacement injector from RC eng. too
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/07092009508.jpg
but still no bloody sign of my seal and gaskest kit and pumps :( Im really hoping they get here before the weekend so i can drop the block off for machining, but lets see how that goes.
The head gasket is being sent back too, tis the wrong one  im in no big rush at the min so its that important yet
Its been a bit since i updated any of this on here,
some new track rimmage i got for cheaps

like a muppet i went and ordered an s14 oil pick up with out checking my own, there already was the oil pick from a 14 in the car. Ive got another block i can use it on so not a total waste.
Ive had the head and block skimmed and over bored. Both were pretty straight and very little was all was taken off.
I brought the majority of parts into work and put them in one of the washers we have so everything is spotless and oil free now.
The plan was to use a 1mm cometic mgh, but ive got a cometic mhg on a different car and its started to leak so i was second guessing using it. So now ive got a 1.1mm cosworth gasket on its way to me.
Im still missing a a couple of bits to do the rb gearbox conversion so im gonna stick the sr box back in for the break in miles and have the rb good to go afterwards
.................................................
this is where things turned bad.
When i was torquing down my end caps there was a very loud crack and when everything was taken back out i found this looking back at me.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/CIMG1717A.jpg
so that blocks fucked now  I picked up another block last night so gotta get that off for a skim and bore then i can start back into it again
 fookin' ell I saw that block in your van when you picked the gearbox. Money down the drain, feckin cars. Deffo I would be pissed off:mad:
Bad luck lad, stick at it!
What size pistons did you buy colm? Much oversize?
Also what the advantage of the s14 pick up pipe is it larger in diameter or something?
im using 86.5mm pistons so just .5mm over.
The opening on the s14 pickup is a different shape, in a different place on the pick up and a bigger than the one from the 180 block i think.
Ive got some pics of them being compaired somewhere that il dig out and stick up 2m.

Great work man, some nice few bits ya have there to keep yourself busy for
a while! keep us posted:cool:
cheers lads. I keep forgetting to take a pic of the s14 pickup. If ya have a look on driftworks superclarkey does a real good explination of there differences. Il take some pics of mine when im back in the shed and manage to remember.
The new block is back with a skim and bore and now im back to where i was about 3weeks ago.
While ive had nothing to do I got the valves back into the head and got thinking about dirt.
After the head and deck skim there were a good few burrs left on surfaces of them both. They didnt seem loose or weak but I dont like burrs so brought the lot into work for an extra clean up. Then poped everything that touches the inside of the inside of the engine into a washer, new and old.
I might have went a bit over kill on the cleaning, it took me about 3hours after work on friday deburring the head and block and to wash everything.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/30102009587.jpg
i oiled and wrapped the lot individually so i wont have to take them from the clean bags until there going back into the engine.
I got some calico coated main bearing while waiting on the block
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/31102009588.jpg
I got stuck into it today and got the crank and cradle back in trouble free this time. I was being very careful as i as did it lol Im still not exactly sure what happened with the last time so I was taking no risks this time round.
I went at gapping my rings then.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/31102009589.jpg
While i had it in work i decided to measure the new bores myself
they are, 86.50. 86.505. 86.51 and 86.515. I did the calcs for each of the bore dimensions and it didnt mean a measurable difference for the gaps so all was good
Again with my new found fear of fcuking things up i took it slow enough, fecking rings were hard as hell. Lots of filing to get the 1st ring to size, the others werent so bad.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/CIMG1723.jpg
all ready to go in :D
added a few rods

Looks good colm strange to see the block crack the way it did nice
to see its been turned around now though:)

True, but i guess its the weakest point, it went through the oil hole.
Bit more done tonight but not as much as I wanted, mainly cos Im a gobshite :annoyed:
New rear oil seal in, it was much easier get in out than i was expecting giving the size and type of seal it is.

The last time il be seeing my crank kangaroo for a long time i hope

I got the oil pump, timing chain guides and timing chain back in aswell along witht the sump.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/CIMG1746.jpg
This is where i had a bit of a hold up. I couldnt find 2 bolts, the ones that go between the sump and oil pump. I thought i put them in the wrong bag when i was labeling stuff as i took it off. 45mins of pulling the place apart i found them screwed back into the old pump
Im sure a few will notice i did things a bit arse about face too  i put the sump on before the oil pick up. It only took a few mins to get it it right but still another bit of a cock up

Im going to start at the rest of the pieces that need to be bolted on tomorrow night and try get the block mated to the gear box on saturday and in before sunday night :D
Im not sure if its because everything is so shinny or what but the pistons looked pretty close to the head when you look down into the block. But there were no bangs or creaks when i turned the crank so i know everything is clearing thank christ
more bits bolted back on

where did you send the turbo for the rebuild and how much in total
good work, should be crunchy
where did you send the turbo for the rebuild and how much in total
turbo dynamics in england did it, was about £230 for the refurb i think.
the engine is ready to go back into the car now. The plan was to get it in over the weekend but i burned my hand in work on friday and only realised saturday morning when it was raw and cover in blisters how bad it really was so that really screwed me over doing things 1.5handly.
When sticking the tubro back on the block I noticed that the water feed/return lines were blocked off on my engine. I never coped it when i was taking the turbo off for some reason but that prob had some hand in my turbo seals shiting themselves.
I got some hydraulic lines made up to use for the water lines, i can see now why they might have decided not to use them when the tubby was stuck on in japland. pain in the hole running the return line.
anyway, engine is all back together.clutch and gearbox are bolted on and crane is out and ready to pop it back in after work tomorrow.
Ive got pics but cant find the cable so il stick em up when i get it

i had the same prob wit a mani stud before ended up have to bring it to a machine shop to get the bolt milled out was perfect after tho...its still a rite ball ache wen it happens tho
it was a right pain in the hole alright. I ended up drilling most of it out in the end and using a torx bit to unscrew it and then retapped it afterwards just be get the threads back healthy again.
Im lacking pics again but the engine is in! :D finally back where it belongs

Ive been playing the "shr while its out" game now for a while. the "where the fcuk does this go" game started tonight
once i get all the wiring bits n pieces sorted out i should be flying. Im aiming for first start tomorrow night after i grab some oil
Fair play man, sum project:cool:
Thats some project and some mental work put into it,
fair play to ya mate, keep up the good work. Hope it goes 100per cent for ya :)
Cheers lads :)
It lives!!................ kinda....
had all sorts of shit trying to get this started. I thought it was battery related but ended up being the starter. It was on it way out from months of bad e85 cold starts and the new compression seems to be too much for it.
With the plugs it in the starter was stalling. Without the plugs in its still not strong enough to turn the engine over enough to do a proper comression test. You need 300rpm to do the check. and I can only manage 100rpm and am making between 145-150psi at that.
A fixed starter in and it started on about he 15th attempt. The new setup isnt liking the current map much so is having lots of trouble starting and then keeping going. It was a gamble to see if it would even start with the old map, but it did :D:D for bout 15secs till i spotted an oil leak lol.
I need to do some more tightening up on some oil lines and on the belts and shes good to go then get a new map on her and start racking up the miles
Just read it all there, savage work man. Awesome craftsmanship!

Finally got the car running today! :D stiv poped down and worked his magic and changed a few settings and she barked into life.
Time to start racking up some milage now so i can get a remap asap :D
Nice one, hope it runs........like an animal!
only seeing ur thread now man ....... !fair fannys to ye
well done colm hats of to ya..
Mint project Colm, fair play
in your first pic of the car is that garda crime scene tape on the railins ???????haha..........:D
Thanks for all the comments lads :)
Shes up n running nicely now with sfa lag. I had it up with stiv last weekend and we took it out to check everything is still running ok. All the fueling is now sorted and nice and healthy, it was a bit rich down low and lean around 3k but if it was still bang on after all the work thats been done on it it would be a bit wierd lol
It got a new rev limit of 4500rpm and running .66bar for next 900miles of the run in. All was going grand till about thursday when the ice started coming n it been hard to find anywhere to drive it without aiming for a ditch constantly so im not risking it till it clears up a bit. Only have about 350miles left to do so shouldnt be take too much longer till its ready for a full map
a little pic of everything done :D

yea its a balls :( all the driving so far as been in the rain but i was driving around the other night in the snow n ice n got the feeling i was being a bit stupid lol
Not gonna risk banging it up now when im just a few hundred miles from being finished. Hopefully the ice might melt for a while 2m afternoon long enough to me to get out of my yard and take it for bit of a spin

i take it thats its you thats been up at bishops court flat out?
nope wasnt me dude, never been up that way at all
Im bored so figured id update this abit. The car is just about run in now, all the shitty weather is stopping me from getting the car on the road much.Ive got about 200kms to go to make the magic 1000miles and time for a full map.
I got a bit bored today so started work on a couple of new things i picked up a couple of months back. This is gonna be a track car and something to try a few things with.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02012010655.jpg
its a 180 shell with everything bar engine and gearbox. Il be taking it into the garage and stripping it out as soon as i get some stuff sorted and make some room.
I got the engine ive lined up for this car on the stand today and after about 3hours i had it fully stripped n looking like this.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02012010658.jpg
I hadnt planned on touching it for a while but figured while everthing from my other build was still in my head i should get stuck in.
The engine itself doenst seem to bad so far. It was down on compression and was rebuilt in a hurry by another fella and never started after that. It looks like it might be a low enough milage block, the big ends look almost new and the mains only have a tiny amount of wear on them.
There was coolant mixed with the oil though and some coolant/water sitting in cyl 1 and its left some rust marks on the bore.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02012010660.jpg
I had planned on honing all the bores anyway so hopefully that will clear it up. After that then the flywheel is in major need of a skim. There was a 4puck clutch on it thats been well used. The pressure plate that was on it is wore enough too but il use it till it dies, ive other parts to spend money on.
The inside of the oil pump that houses the rotor looks like its starting to crack so il stick on the oil pump from my other build, i know that was running fine.
Various nuts and bolts are missing from the block and theres a few bolts from the cam retainers broke off that are gonna need retapping. Then just a matter of bolting it all back together n get the most i can out of it.
this is for frank really lol but there was a standard redtop oil pick up in that block so finally could get some picks to really show the differences between the redtop and blacktops pickup.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02012010662.jpg
blacktop on the left. Redtop on the right.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02012010663.jpg
Blacktop above uses a sheet gasket to seal. The redtop under it uses an O ring.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/02012010664.jpg
and the different bracket mounting positions. Retop on the left. Blacktop on the right
Its the blacktop one with the steel gasket i have lad, cool :)
So exactly how fancy is this new engine gonna be
For now its gonna be kept simple enough. Port n polish the head, 1mm mhg, 1000cc injectors, e85, custom intake mani(hopefully), 90mm t/b, standard rods n pistons, acl bearings, top mount exhaust manifold and a t3 of some sort n rb box. Should be enough to keep it reliable and pokey.
Il start stockpiling the other parts I need and by the end of the year pull it apart and fiddle with it a bit more ;)
thats the job colm.i have still no luck with a turbo :-( i won't be able to make it over to u tomorrow either
No bothers man. I was gonna give you a txt in a bit to say the roads around here arent too good. Im finding it the same with the turbo and the other stuff :( found the turbo i want, just not a price i want to pay. Il give ya a bell tomorrow, have a few other things to chat to ya about too.
would ya sell the front lip off the black one? :)
Yea lad il see anything off it i can lol.
Are you in any hurry for it? i prob wont be stripping it down for another couple of weeks
i stripped down the head of the other engine tonight. The stem seals look to be on there way out, there was feck all resistance on them when moving the valves and the rubber is tearing on them a bit.
Theres also 2 broken cam retainer bolts stuck it in that ive got to find a way to take out.
I was poping the valves out n was a bit suprised to see this...

there was a good bit of water in it but that seems to be the most of the rust. the rocker cover gasket was even close to being sealed on the block so im hoping thats where it came from.
I was worried there might have been a bent valve but so far they look good. Only looking by eye so far but il check them properly over the weekend and mic them to make sure there still in tolerance
colm did you have to change all the fuel lines for e85???
where did you get the bits..
cheers...

I did indeed lad but its only really necessary if your aiming for 400+
I used 3/8 hydraulic hose for the main need line and 8mm rubber hose then for the rest. I used some over braided stuff for the lines in the car just to provide a bit of extra protection over them.
For a track car youd get away will all rubber lines, ive seen them being used on a couple of road cars with no issues at all.

cheers lad.. i going e85 with my own yoke i recon..
was just told that it might be better if i checked this out 1st;)
nice one :D ! e85 ftw. Id say if you can ya might as well swap the lines for 8mm, the standard ones can get a bit restrictive when you really start looking for juice
Im snowed in today so decided to fit my adjustable rear arms.

i just measured them up the to the same as the standard for now and il take it to be aligned propely when the weather clears up
Ive been messing about with a few things and made a bit of an attempt to get some more lock, thanks to tj for a mad notion that paid off
I marked up things roughly and did some rough trig. and before doing anything i had 32degs of lock either side.
http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e163/colm250/180/13012010685.jpg
Now ive 44degs.

some clearence issuse are about to arise i think. My disc is about .5mm from catching the lower arm and im getting close to the tension rod with the inside of the rim. As long as there not rubbing im happy, when we get a way to alter the anchorman without having to do any welding il prob have to make a few adjustments
Glad it worked out well fella :)
Did you take pics of the work ya did?
sssshhhh its a secret lol
haha so secret i dont even know what your talking about :p
Glad it worked out well fella :)
Did you take pics of the work ya did?
cheers frank, no didnt get any pics while i was working with em
Time this was updated.
Things have gotten pretty slow this last while. I stuck on some adjustable rear arms and then woeful trouble trying to find anyone to re-align my car because it was "too low, too long and too wide" but i eventually got it done so its sorted for now. It isnt exctly how i wanted it and there was a slight misunderstanding which led to some almost positive camber on the front but tis sorted now.
While i was waiting if got some hid's and locking collars from apex. The lights are unbelievable, the difference between them and the standard ones is incredable.
There was a terrible knocking coming from the rear of the car after fitting the collars, after a bit of searching i found out thats fairly normal so now i get to hear every bang and clunk coming from my diff. It would have been handy if i had found that out before taking the collars on and off a couple of times to figure out wtf the noise was
and a slightly less boring update, the car is now mapped and pulling like a train! :D:D
Stiv worked a bit of his magic on it today and its reminded me how much all the effort was worth it
We expected the q45 afm to max our first but it held out and still has some more room to go. It never went about 4.86v i think. At the min its mapped up to 1.5bar. Once it goes over 1.4/1.5bar is starting to drop to about 1.3 once were above 7k rpm.
Stiv thinks the .5bar spring in the wastegate could be opening slightly so time to get a 1bar spring and keep going.
There was little or no knock throughout the mapping, reading less than 40 on the wideband on the 1.6bar run with plenty of timing advance.
Its now coming on boost at about 2800 and hitting full at about 4000 and feels like a different turbo compaired to how it was running. It used to begin spooling at about 3500.
Traction is now an issue hitting 4.5k in second gave us an interesting instant loss of grip moment on a bone dry road. Along with it slipping out of 4th gear while doing a power run in when lifting off at the limiter
all in all im a happy chap today some more things to do before the trackday but nothing too major. Massive thanks to Stiv for spot on work as always
Higher compression e85 powers ftmfw!
hows the sr box holding up man??i'd say mondello won't be long about testing it!same as myself:D

Theres more to come still ;) the BHP figure was only at 1.4bar, boost starts dropping off after 4600 cos of the wastegate spring but ive a new one on the way to keep a handle on it so then she should hold 1.8bar to the redline
