View Full Version : My sierra build....
Well since my tramper sierra decided to shit herself last month ive decided to go all out and do it someway right this time....collected my new shell last friday nite, she's a 2.9 12V V6 with a little niceys like koni's,polybushed, ashley system with scorpion rear box,its got a cossie spoiler and grille so must get a cossie front bumper to finish off the aesthitic side of things.Im going with a 24V BOA Cosworth lump which i should have in my possesion middle of the week.Doing the conversion is being made much simpler by already havin a v6 shell,it means i dont have to change the tank, lines, pump, box, flywheel and starter!! im hoping with a few little mods to have bout 220bhp and over 200lb ft of torque, all n/a of course!!:D:D Still undecided on what rear set up im going with yet, either 2l back drums, push in shafts and my "custom" handbrake for those of ye that saw it in my tramper or disc setup, bolt on shafts and a hydro which is proper the favoured option with the extra power!!:p So heres a brief spec list of how it will be all going well in a months time,im hoping to put the car together for D-rift on the 4th july and strip her down end off season and seam weld the shell etc when all nigglys ares sorted....
90 Sierra Sapphire Shell
24V BOA Cosworth
MT75x Gearbox and quickshift

Ordered Polycarbonate today for the windows.....thought it be much dearer, bout 70quid for enough to do the 4 sides, well happy, collectin engine, loom, ecu and down pipes in the morning!!
Is that lump very heavy paul?
I dont have or could never find tech specs for the weight of it frank but the block is actually quite small and it has two alloy heads which helps, that coupled with the removal of automatic tensioners, air con pump, possibly power steering pump should be alot less, ive a manual alternator tensioner put on mine and all il be running for a start is that, water pump and bottom pulley, should help power a bit too!!Must make up my downpipes both with decats, lighten my flywheel, blank off the egr valve, short ram intake pipe, removing viscous fan im hoping for over 220bhp and well higher that 200lb/ft torque!!
My 24v,loom and downpipes....

also got around to gettin the engine and box outta the old sierra...
Theres 2 ways in taking an engine out
1) with an engine crane
2)without an engine crane...:D:D:P:P:P 2 cents to who guesses which way i did it....

ast nights efforts started with cleaning out the shed and making a bit more room to work on the car.....pulling out the green sierra was a nightmare with the welded diff!!!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera041-2.jpg
nearly toppled it over bout two seconds after this!!!

The pic of it balancing on the tyres is fuppin gas :D
yea frank. no safety around der. love it..:D
How bad ;)
Will ye be ready for D-rift Paul?
Will your cage be good enough for top 16 this time? After making top 16 last time it must have been a balls not to compete over the cage....
i wouldnt quite call it balancing....:D:D the following moments were quite interesting!!!ha!!
hopefully anyway frank,so much to do like but feck it ,it'l be worth it!! oh god ya,full safety devices 6 pointer this time!!it was a sickener but on the other hand ii didnt even expect to qualify so was still happy out!!
Fitted one of those BOA engines to a sierra a few years ago. The sierra was running a vauxhall redtop on 45s, but we whipped that out and dropped in the valver! Conversion was dead simple, all hoses etc just worked out perfect. We had to convert a xr4x4 box to rwd, but other than that it was grand.
The boa is much easier to wire than the bob.
Best of luck with it, they sound fantastic!
@ jhinchy hopefully the wiring will go straight forward for me,the loom is stripped of whats not needed and everything labeled so fingers crossed, and i aint got no box issues as she's 12v v6 already so got the proper mt75!!;);) cheers!!
got the 12v out last night, was a bit of a arse pain cause theres no lifting hooks and i lifted it all crooked bending one of the pressure plate forks in the process,ah well!! Think i found my shuddering/vibration problem too,2 bolts were bolting the gearbox to the engine, one of which was loose to the point that 2 turns with my hand brought it out....
24v will hopefully be in by the weekend!
well tonight s progress was good, happy out,its full steam ahead now from here till sat week, hoping to have it out and ready for D-rift on saturday the 4th!! :D
Started this evening with ripping out the steel scuttle/bulkhead/heater fan panel as these always rot in sierras and excess weight!!
Its the black one at the top of the bulkhead
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera047-2.jpg
Out and chucked in the bin!!I forgot to take a pic with that and the heater fan out but it tidy's up the engine bay and awful lot and makes much more space!!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera048-2.jpg
Thats with the heater fan out and the scaley rust bits and pieces still there from the panel...
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera049-3.jpg
Started ripping out the seats, dash and carpet...
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera050-3.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera051-4.jpg
and onto the sound deadening, this stuff was thick and seriously heavy,so more weight loss here...
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera052-2.jpg
Heater box out...
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera054-2.jpg
Dash out...
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera053-1.jpg
All sound deadening removed and loom clipped back in apart from the stuff glued to the floor but that can wait....
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera055-1.jpg
Got the clutch and flywheel off the 12V...was planning on lightening the fly but have decided against it as it looks to be extremely light as is so maybe has been done before??? i dunno....
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera056-2.jpg
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/SamsungCamera057-1.jpg

@bart ya?? il have a nose around during the week if i can come up with anything for ya...;)
cheers ted:D
IT RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!for about 3-4secs....:(:( still tho im gettin super close to gettin it running, and the fact she started for a few secs has motivated me!!:D:D i fooled the ecu to open the injectors a few times and with the drop of fuel they put into the cylinders ,she fired on it...at least it tells me all is okay engine wise...still tho my ecu isnt switching the injectors and cant see why....maybe just a little maybe she'll be out on monday!!!
man thats good news. great to hear she is running(kinda). you have put some amount of time and effort into it
cheers lad....hopefully il get it goin for monday, even if i got it running and not ready id be happy at this stage...dyin to get a spin off it!!
Well found my problem during the week, although noy rectified yet but 100% sure...i was barking up the wrong tree all the time...turns out injectors were firing but fuel pressure was too low, carried out a pressure test and was 1.5 bar at the pump and a little less at the rail,24v's need a minimum of 2.7bar at the rail with vacuum or 3.2 without...i was using an external pump so now i need to drop the tank and fit another with an in tank pump, hopefully il get a chance to do during the week!! Be Back soon...:D:D
Finally to fuck she started this morning,I nearly went thru the roof!! Simplest of problems after all, simply changed the tank and pump and away she went...24v driftness here we come...:D:D:D Must make up the exhaust, bleed brakes, put back the loom together and reassemble everything for monday next for WGH practice day!!!Cannot wait!!

Haha nice one lad:cool:
Feels good to be putting the car back together, first nights enjoyment of working on it tonight since fuckin july....Got al my fuel lines sorted engine bay side, also dropped out my old tank and tried putting back up the new one but failed due to me not having 6 hands...:(:( once i get a hand off one of the lads that will be finished, ripped out al the gammy ford plastic petrol lines, now have steel lines running back the car with braided hosing joining them to the fuel rail and tank...So list left to do:
Wire new fuel pump
Repair and put my loom back together, must also put the electric fan, alternator and oil/water temp lights into the loom and close it up!:)
Put on headlamps,bumpers,splitters,bonnet etc...

wel man how'd the car go for you today.
any pics or vids for us
Awful!!:(:( The minute she dropped off the trailer in the morning til bout half 2 i had major issues...Wheels rubbing arches,Handbrake,Fuel problems,Major misfiring problems and the list goes on on....Got an awful fright when i found pistons 5 and 6 had a good thick layer of oil on them, was thinking valves or rings but eventually put it down to little o ring rubbers sealing the plug holes from the rocker cover were leaking, sealed them up and had little problems after that, still down on power due to tps sensor acting up or not being set properly,it sticks the throttle which doesnt allow me to rev it,but got bout 5 or 6 runs after dinner,WOW she was running shit and the power is crazy,i love it,she'l link the straights no problem once she's running right. Im delighted with the suspension set up too, solid throughout although must go at my rack cause i dnt have enough lock, easy fix. 3 runs burned €20 of juice and bout 6 runs fairly well fooked a set of brand new 17's... i love it!!all in all happy for her first day out, bring on d-rift in october!!
Had no time for camera unfortunalty but there was a photographer out on track, must find out who it was!!
week ago we put on sierra 2.0 DOCH turbo!
~0.5bar + few more modifications. put 100% lsd on :D
nice drifting now for 8valve DOCH,not croshworth.
bout time i updated this....
after two practice days now with the car, both filled with issues....the worst being yesterday when a buckled wheel causes my 4 rear wheel studs to shear, resulting in the wheel saying goodbye and goodluck at bout 50mph slightly sideways!!Burst my spacer into bits & burst rear brake disc into 3pieces...So big push on again to get in the final round of d-rift this weekend...just dropped the car off tonight to get a manifold back stainless steel exhaust made up...its gonna twin decatted 2" pipes going as far as the back axle, joining to 1 with a 5" scorpion rear box...Once i get the car back i must repair the damage to the rear end, sort a few leaks & run a diagnostic and set my tps and idle control screw...that and wire in a speed sensor to the ecu as i think there my main probs for misfiring at the mo....be back soon with pics....
Go Paul its your birthday................Love this car!!! Cant wait for the new exhaust........
jesus man thats sounds ruf!
id hate to piss on your parade but would you not give D-rift a mist this weekend and sort out all the little things and have the car right before they turn into a big thing. i know after all the work thats not what you want to hear but it may save you alot more time:(

Go for it lad, there's still plenty of time between now + Sunday .
@ ste... if right was right the car should of never went on track this year, but without testing il never know the problems and so on...plus im filtering thru all the problems bit by bit and getting there slowly....that and the itch to go sideways is always there,so il keep trying even though what your saying makes total sense!!:D:D:D
@chuck my bday was yesterday a slowjoe...:P:P:P il still accept it your okay!!:D
X2 :D
Go for it lad, there's still plenty of time between now + Sunday .
Exactly...;):p
Exhausts nearly finished, collecting it tomor evening, and also completed my cosworth kit,so now have a front bumper, skirts and bonnet grilles to go on...:D as these are far more important than a misfiring engine and stuff:o
Im looking forward to Sunday i must say!! :) Keep it up lad!!
Gonna be such a roar off ur bus we wont hear Jp Mccarthy at it!

I was beggining to think you had lost interest in this, glad it hasnt been pushed to one side.
if i havent lost it now i never will..it will go at some stage...:P
Moved units there this week so the sierra is now indoors and again..:) done a bit of stripping to the engine tonight...hoping to get a new fuel rail, injectors and air flow meter in and see if it sorts my problem...maybe just maybe it might see punchestown...:) will get pics up soon!! :)
Why IT over the 86
Power Franky i bos...and i did build it for more than to sit in the corner and not work..:D :D and if al fails whish more than likely will happen the 86 must just be put up on the trailer and hit the road..:D
Ya i suppose after the work/effort ya want to see how it goes anyway....
Why did you change garage? they finally wanted rid of ya :p
and i want to beat your stupid charged asses...:P :P haha exactly he evicted me cos of not getting the sierra going..:P ah no got a bigger placer closer to home, lovely set up now in fairness!! :)
just a snap with the inlet off...pulling out the rail is grand but putting it back down with the 6 injectors is hell as they all point the opposite direction..!! ugghh!!!
http://i51.photobucket.com/albums/f361/pt_y2k/S7300084.jpg
when i was putting mine down the other day, plug all the injectors into the rail first and theres not too much messing to get them into the bores after that..
Story alan...;) quick snap as she lies now...its indoorsfor the first time in like 5 months and there she'l stay :)

Any progress on this paul?
Any progress on this paul?
Ha.............he's too busy being in love and taking banging shits!
na chuck some call it work..:P no progress but wil get at it again with some spare time over the xmas...Dunno if i said so on the thread or not but my problem all along with the car not running and bein down on power was al due to wrong injectors fitted...there was 6 yb injectors as the engine was previously been built for aftermarket management, also to add one of the injector pentils were cracked so it had 5 wrong injectors and one faulty...il have it running over the xmas and once it is,gonna pull the engine out,do a bit of arch work, paint and have it on a practice day early next year to see what other problems i have...:)
